Secondary School Teacher

Teaches one or more subjects to secondary students, planning lessons, assessments, and mentoring to support achievement. Manages classrooms and builds relationships with students and whānau. A registered qualification is required for this role in NZ. The role demands strong subject knowledge, engaging lesson delivery, and the patience to support students across very different starting points. A secondary teaching qualification and registration with the Teaching Council are required for the role. The role involves preparing lessons and marking well after the school day ends, so good planning habits matter. Many teachers specialise further into dean, head-of-department, or pastoral roles.
